Proper care is the key to healthy skin. Robert Siragusa, M.D.; Charles Kovaleski, M.D. your Panama City, FL dermatologists at Dermatology Associates Skin and Cancer Center share a few skin care tips that will help you keep your skin looking and feeling good.
Normal skin simply means that your skin isn't overly dry, oily or sensitive. Caring for normal skin is uncomplicated and involves using a mild cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen daily. To keep your skin looking great, wash off makeup before you go to sleep and avoid harsh products that can irritate skin.
Flaky, patchy skin cannot only be unsightly, but also uncomfortable. Dry skin can be caused by cold or windy weather, changes related to aging and taking hot showers and baths. In addition to lowering the temperature when you bathe, you can also improve the condition of your skin if you:
- Decrease the time you spend in the tub or shower: Avoiding long soaks can reduce dry, tight skin.
- Avoid scrubbing your skin: Instead use gentle motions and a mild cleanser.
- Use creams and ointments: Lotion may not remain on your skin long enough to offer real benefits.
Shiny patches on your face or enlarged pores can be signs that you have oily skin. You may also experience problems with acne if excess oil clogs your pores. Using acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide or retinols, or trying a topical prescriptions medication that contains tretinoin can help minimize breakouts. Keep your skin oil free by washing it with a mild cleanser twice a day and dabbing it gently with blotting papers to remove excess oil. Look for oil-free moisturizers and sunscreens to avoid making the problems worse.
Managing combination skin can be difficult since parts of your skin are oily, while other areas are dry. Gentle cleansers are also best for this skin type. Spot treatments can help even out your skin. Apply topical acne medications if pimples appear on the oilier parts of your skin and use thicker creams and ointments to add moisture to dry patches.
