Catch and Treat Abnormal Moles Before They Progress

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that develops in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It most often appears as an irregular mole or dark spot that changes in size, shape, or color over time. Unlike other cancers, melanoma can spread rapidly to other parts of the body if not detected early. At Dermatology Associates Skin & Cancer Center, our expert dermatology team provides advanced diagnostics to identify and address melanoma in its earliest, most treatable stages.

Signs & Symptoms of Melanoma:

  • A new mole or dark spot that looks different from others on your skin
  • Changes in an existing mole’s color, size, shape, or border
  • Uneven or irregular edges with multiple shades of brown, black, or red
  • A mole that itches, bleeds, or becomes painful
  • A lesion that doesn’t heal or continues to grow over time
  • Pigmentation that spreads beyond the border of a mole or spot

Professional Melanoma Screening & Diagnosis

During your melanoma screening, your dermatology provider will perform a full-body skin examination to assess every mole and spot for size, color, shape, and asymmetry. Using dermatoscopic technology, your provider examines the skin’s surface under magnification to identify even subtle irregularities that may indicate early melanoma.

If an area appears suspicious, a small biopsy is performed under local anesthesia to confirm the diagnosis. This simple, precise procedure allows your dermatology provider to examine skin cells under a microscope and determine the exact type and stage of melanoma, ensuring that you receive the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plan possible.

Your Melanoma Treatment Options

Your melanoma care begins with a detailed consultation. During this visit, your dermatology provider reviews your biopsy results, the depth and stage of the melanoma, and your health. Together, you’ll discuss the best course of treatment for complete removal while preserving healthy tissue and achieving optimal cosmetic results. Each treatment plan is personalized to your needs and may include one or a combination of the following techniques.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Dr. Wolfe performs Mohs micrographic surgery to remove melanoma layer by layer under microscopic guidance. This precise method allows him to identify and remove all cancerous cells while sparing as much healthy skin as possible. It offers the highest cure rate of up to 99% for early-stage melanoma and is ideal for delicate or cosmetically sensitive areas.

Wide Local Excision

A wide local excision involves surgically removing the melanoma along with a predetermined margin of normal skin, often 1-2 centimeters, depending on tumor thickness. The specimen is then evaluated to confirm complete clearance. While this method is effective, it can lead to larger scars and a higher recurrence rate than Mohs surgery.

Lymph Node Mapping and Biopsy

If the melanoma shows signs of deeper invasion, your provider may order a sentinel lymph node biopsy to check whether the cancer has spread beyond the skin. A special dye identifies the first affected lymph node(s), which are then examined microscopically. This step helps guide further treatment, such as immunotherapy or targeted therapy, if needed.

Reconstructive Care

Following melanoma removal, your provider will offer advanced reconstructive techniques to restore both function and appearance. Depending on the size and location of the surgical site, this may include layered closure, local skin flaps, or grafting. Dr. Wolfe’s specialized Mohs and reconstructive training ensure precise healing with natural, seamless results.
