Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, affecting millions of Americans each year. It often appears as a pearly bump, red patch, or non-healing sore. At Dermatology Associates Skin & Cancer Center, our providers offer expert, compassionate care to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes.
Stop Cancer Spread With Prompt Treatment
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a slow-growing form of skin cancer that develops in the basal cells, which are responsible for producing new skin. It usually appears as a pearly or flesh-colored bump, most often on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, or neck. While BCC rarely spreads to other parts of the body, it can cause significant local damage if left untreated. At Dermatology Associates Skin & Cancer Center, our experienced dermatology team carefully evaluates each lesion to ensure early, precise treatment.
Signs & Symptoms of Basal Cell Carcinoma:
- Pearly or waxy bump that may bleed or crust
- Flat, flesh-colored, or brown scar-like patch
- Sore that doesn’t heal or repeatedly returns
- Red, irritated area that may itch or hurt
- Shiny bump with visible blood vessels
- Small growth with a central depression or ulcer
Professional BCC Screening & Diagnosis
When you visit Dermatology Associates Skin & Cancer Center, your dermatology provider will carefully examine your skin from head to toe to identify any suspicious growths, sores, or color changes. Using a dermatoscope, a specialized magnifying instrument, we can view skin structures beneath the surface to identify features suggestive of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
If a lesion appears concerning, your provider will perform a quick, minimally invasive skin biopsy. This involves removing a small tissue sample under local anesthesia and sending it to a lab for microscopic analysis. The results confirm whether the cells are really cancerous and guide your treatment plan. Our expert providers will offer the most accurate diagnosis and effective care possible.
Your BCC Treatment Options
Your treatment journey begins with a detailed consultation. During this visit, your dermatology provider will review your biopsy report, map the tumor’s location, and evaluate how deep it extends into the surrounding skin. Together, you’ll discuss all available options to determine the safest and most effective approach for removing the cancer while preserving appearance and function.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Performed exclusively by Dr. Wolfe, this technique removes cancer cells one microscopic layer at a time. Each layer is immediately examined under the microscope until no cancer remains. Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate of up to 99% for new cases while conserving healthy tissue. It’s the gold standard for treating BCCs on delicate areas like the face, ears, or neck.
Excisional Surgery
Excision involves surgically cutting out the tumor with a safety margin of normal skin, which is later tested in a lab. While this approach is effective for some low-risk lesions, it doesn’t offer the same precision as Mohs surgery. Because margins aren’t evaluated in real time, recurrence occurs in roughly 1 out of 20 cases, making it less ideal for facial or recurrent BCCs.
Curettage and Electrodesiccation
In this method, your provider uses a curette (a small, spoon-shaped instrument) to gently scrape away the tumor, followed by a low-voltage electric current to destroy remaining cancer cells. It’s best suited for small, shallow BCCs on non-cosmetic areas. Though quick and cost-effective, it carries a slightly higher risk of recurrence and may leave a textured scar.
Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery destroys cancer cells by applying extreme cold using liquid nitrogen. The freezing process causes the abnormal tissue to blister, die, and gradually slough off. This non-surgical option works best for superficial or early BCCs but doesn’t allow for microscopic margin control. For that reason, it’s typically reserved for select, low-risk cases.
